If you want your watch caseback engraved, go for it. Just pick a reputable engraver, that does quality work AND will take care of the rest of your watch. I had a Rolex Sub engraved recently, through Tourneau/Bucherer when I purchased. My father is on a daytona steel black dial waitlist, we have good relationship with our AD, and I planned to give a rolex to him on his 60 birthday which is on january 2024, I asked my salesperson for a OP 41 green dial, datejust 41 white roman dial, or any steel gmt which I will engrave on the back, but I was thinking on tell the salesperson .
Just recently, the authenticity of a super rare Rolex Daytona Paul Newman “Lemon” Ref. 6264 in 18k gold, offered by Christie’s in Hong Kong on May 28, 2018, was publicly challenged due to engravings with an apparently incorrect “typeface”. Engraving was a complimentary service by Rolex so I didn't have to pay anything and there was no extra charge for handwriting. From what I was told it was laser which makes sense because I sent them a digital file of the text/handwriting. I see a lot of talk of "heirloom" watches on this forum. Engraving just cements that, IMHO. Most can be buffed out if necessary or the caseback can be easily replaced. These are Rolex watches, not unique antique pateks!
